7 Mistakes to Avoid When Visiting Alaska

Inside passage scenic cruising on Princess Cruises Alaskan cruise

Alaska is another one of those places, if you haven’t visited, I hope you get there soon. Especially for those who live in the US, it’s fairly accessible and a wonderful way to see wildlife, glaciers and the vast beauty of the wilderness.

I do suggest a cruise for this part of the world, as the main cities are on the water, so why not have a floating hotel take you from place to place. There are many options to choose from and planning a trip can become overwhelming. I’m here to help you sift through your options to choose a cruise that’s right for you.

Here are the 7 things to know when planning your trip to Alaska.

1. Choose the Correct Itinerary

There are 2 main types of itineraries in Alaska:
1. Roundtrip inside passage
2. One way traveling north to south or vice versa.

  • There are also 3 key ports to visit – Skagway, Ketchikan & Juneau. I suggest having all three on your itinerary.

  • Another consideration is how long the ship is at port. Some itineraries may only have you visiting for 4 hours where others stay the day.

  • The one-way itinerary traveling north to south is a fabulous option, as you’ll have only 1 day not in Alaska & you avoid Vancouver’s embarkation process.

  • Inside passage is a great option for first time visitors, as the logistics are easier.

2. Pre & Post Cruise Stay

Many travelers fly long distances to get to Alaska and therefore having time to adjust to a different time zone is nice.
Adding the land portion, to the beginning of your cruise, is a wonderful way to adjust and explore the Denali area. You also have a better chance of seeing wildlife up close.

3. When to Visit Alaska?

  • It’s a short season (May – September) so they are all good times.

  • If you want less kids, then either May or September.

  • Wildlife is most active June – August.

4. Which Cruise Line?

I recommend choosing based on itinerary & a line that’ll take you to
Glacier Bay – one of the most amazing viewing areas.
Holland America & Princess have the most access with Norwegian Cruise Line being third.
Only 2 ships per day are allowed at Glacier Bay!

5. Do you need a Balcony Cabin?

If your budget allows, yes, you’ll want a balcony cabin. When the ship is doing its scenic cruising, you can enjoy this from your balcony vs having to go to an open public area. For those doing the north to south, one way voyage, try to get a balcony cabin on the left side of the ship, so you are facing land and more of the scenery.

6. Budget for Tours

Budget friendly excursions tend to be those close to the port. To see more of Alaska, I suggest getting away from the port and those tours tend to cost more like helicopters, dog sledding, trains and float planes.

Top tours to consider:

  • Getting up close to a glacier. Both Ketchikan & Juneau are great spots for glacier viewing.

  • Those who love wildlife there are whale watching tours and others.

  • A final one to budget for is the White Pass Railway in Skagway. It takes you high in the mountains for incredible views.

7. What to Pack?

Assume it’ll rain, so pack a hooded waterproof jacket & umbrella. Days tend to be both warm and cold, so dressing in layers is the way to go.

  • If you’re visiting a glacier, I’d suggest bringing an extra layer like thermals. Otherwise, jeans, long & short sleeve shirts with a jacket are fine.

  • Also bring waterproof gloves, scarf, hat & sunglasses as the sun can be intense reflecting off the water and snow.

  • A backpack will be helpful carrying these items for you.

  • Clothes for the ship are the same for other cruises – casual clothes by day and dressier at night (optional).
