7 Tips for Renting and Driving a Car in Ireland

In Ireland they drive on the left

A self-driving style vacation in Ireland promises breathtaking landscapes, charming villages, and the freedom to explore at your own pace. However, there are some things to consider like the fact they drive on the left side of the road. It’s recommended to have at least one other person in the car to help you navigate, when you don’t have experience driving on the opposite side of the car and road.

Following are some valuable tips to ensure a smooth and memorable journey on the scenic roads of this enchanting country.

7 Tips for Driving in Ireland:

  1. For renting a car you’ll need your driver’s license, passport, and credit card. Debit cards are not accepted (as of this writing). If you didn’t hire me for your vacation (ie you booked on your own), I highly recommend getting extra insurance.

  2. Cars are mostly standard transmission, so when booking your rental, I suggest double checking you’re reserving an automatic.

  3. Roads are known for being narrow, especially in tourist spots like the Ring of Kerry or Connemara (watch for sheep and cows). Major highways tend to be easier to navigate.

  4. Outside the big cities, navigating gets easier. Just go slow and be cautious.

  5. Roundabouts may be tricky. If a car has a blinker on, they are coming into the lane whether you make space for them or not. They tend to not yield to other cars.

  6. Google maps has been known to work well for navigation. Many rental cars also include navigation, or you may be able to request it.

  7. Locals are known for being friendly and willing to help if you need it.

I hope these tips don’t discourage you from trying self-drive in Ireland, but instead provided you with the knowledge and confidence to embark on an unforgettable journey. Those who have vacationed this way say they enjoyed the experience and will do it again in a heartbeat. Sometimes you find the best gems when you “get lost”.

Self-drive/explore isn’t for everyone. If you’re someone who doesn’t like to drive, I suggest being the navigator, or visiting Ireland as part of an escorted group or cruise. Private drivers are another option, if you still want freedom, but not be the one doing the driving.

Majestic Ireland

From navigating the winding roads of the Ring of Kerry to uncovering hidden gems along the Wild Atlantic Way, driving through Ireland allows you to immerse yourself in its captivating beauty and experience the warmth of its people. So, pack your sense of adventure, buckle up, and get ready to create cherished memories as you explore the Emerald Isle. Safe travels and happy driving!
